Deepanjali's comment to my last post, made me rethink on one of my pet questions. "Is it possible for all people to be happy for ever?" Can anyone give me the example of any society/community (across four dimensions of space and time; i.e. anywhere in world or at anytime in history), where everyone is happy? I have not come across any. After seeing societies in India, then few in the so-called-developed countries, I saw NO society where everyone is happy. Why? Back in India, its understandable. There is trouble, poverty, struggle-for-life, disease, negiligence etc etc etc. Things whose mere metion can bring you to tears.
But in developed world.....its some dream place for my standard. Where you have no tension, your life is secured, your future is secured. Still, people are unhappy, troubled, depressed, dejected, destituted, neglated, and miserable. Seeing few troubled families during my social works, I could not decide who are more dejected, we in India or they at here?
Somebody once told, "nature has enough resources to make each of us rich!". Still we are poor. Evenif we are rich, we are still miserable.
Is it then the human nature to be miserable? Or as Osho once told, "there is nothing that can satisfy your mind or heart. Riches, properties, family, love, spirituality...nothing. Only thing that can make us free is the realisation that human mind is insatiable!"
But to me, this raises more questions than it answers. Its like a perpetual cycle. We go on trying to change the condition, to make ourselves happy, work for a better society, toil for a happy-state. But this is something impossible to acheive. Still we work. Still we toil, still we long, still we dream..... As I once heard in a TV seriel (Chanakya), "mAnA ki andherA ghanA hei; sahasra suryon ki roshni bhi use khinna karne mein asamarth hei; fir bhi ek nanhA dipak jaltA jAtA hei. kyun ki wohi uskA dharm hei!". (Its accepted that darkness is pitch deep; so deep that even a thousand sun cant eradicate it; still a tiny lamp goes on burning itself emitting a tiny light. Why? May be because thats what is its characteristics/dharma; thats what its destined to do. Thats what it CAN do!)

Life is a perpetual cycle of happiness and sorrows. without one ,the other wont exist. They are like the two sides of the same coin. To realise one's worth ,the presence of other is necessary.
The poor is unhappy because they dont have enough to eat., enough to wear, enough to make their homes beautiful..they wish they had been rich then they would de driving long cars, living in beautiful palaces. they are unhappy as they arent as wealthy as the rich.
The rich have evrything to be happy about. they have enough bank balance, their children get best of education, they have beautiful homes everywhere.they have every reason to make merry. But still they are unhappy. Why? They worry about their gold, how they will take proper care of them,,how they will hide them from the theives, how they will pay taxes just enough so that the lawmakers and lawkeepers wont doubt them..sometimes they wish if they were just like a common man,,then they wouldnt have so many tensions.
So everywhere all are sad.. but this sadness is also punctuated by moments of happiness ,small joys which make all their life worthliving, which gives them hope to take on life with all its problems and move ahead.so life is perfectly balanced like a cycle.
then why man gets unhappy?Man has an inevitable habit of comparing-mostly with others. the grass always appears greener on the other side.so he tries his level best to acheive the standard of his neighbours and colleagues.Sometimes this becomes a obsession.man is driven by jealousy and hatred. So shouldnt man be satisfied with what he has, accepting evrything by God's grace, never trying for more??But then if he always did so,he would have no ambition to try new things, do new things, then wont his very existence will be a question mark? Afterall this is survival of the fittest. But seers have said never to compare with others but with oneself. So a balance is needed between these two. Compare with others but with an aim to improve oneself. But dont set that as ur limit, reach beyond that.Make sky as ur limit. And always keep burning the candle of hope inside u.
